Did you
know...
1. Dr. George Franklin Grant was an Inventor of the Wooden Golf
Tee. In 1899, he received the first United States patent for a wooden golf
tee. In 1870, he became the second African American to graduate from the
Harvard School of Dental Medicine.
2. Joseph Bartholomew was a Golf Course Architect. In 1922 he
completed construction of Metairie Golf Course(18 holes) at the
Metairie Country Club—a private whites-only club—in Metairie,
Louisiana. Well-known for building courses in Louisiana, other courses
that Bartholomew built included City Park No. 1, City Park No. 2, and
Pontchartrain Park courses in New Orleans.
3. Preston McClain was a Caddy Master at Temple Hills Country Club
in Temple, Texas. In the early 1900s, he became the first caddy master at
Temple Hills Country Club; and 32 years later, he retired as caddy master.
4. Mary Burton was known as the Golfing Granny of the UGA (United
Golfers of America). She started playing golf in 1945 at the age 47,
and developed into one of the best amateur golfers. Burton played
competitively for 29 years and won her last trophy at the age of 76.

1949 The City Council of
Norfolk, Virginia gives Negroes exclusive use of Memorial Park Golf Course
on the second weekend of each month (Friday through Sunday) and on
Wednesday and Fridays of other weeks. |
